Time blindness, and how to work around it
You sit down for what feels like twenty minutes and an hour is gone. Or five minutes of waiting feels like forty. If your sense of time is unreliable in both directions, there is a name for it, and there is something you can do about it.
What time blindness is
Time blindness is a difficulty perceiving the passage of time and estimating how long things take. It is widely reported alongside ADHD, and it fits with research showing that time perception and working memory are often affected. People consistently underestimate how much time has passed, how long a task will take, and how close a deadline really is.
The important thing is that this is not carelessness or a lack of respect for time. The internal clock is simply less reliable. Telling someone with an unreliable clock to "just be more aware of time" is like telling someone who is nearsighted to look harder.
Why willpower does not fix it
Holding the passage of time in your head is a working memory task, and working memory is one of the most consistently reported areas of difficulty in ADHD. So when time lives only in your head, it gets dropped, the same way a phone number does if you stop repeating it.
That is why trying harder does not work. The problem is not effort, it is storage. You can be fully committed to finishing on time and still lose two hours, because the place you were keeping track of time was never reliable to begin with.
Put time on the outside
Russell Barkley, one of the most cited ADHD researchers, describes externalizing information at the point of performance as a core principle. For time, that means getting it out of your head and onto the screen where you cannot lose it.
An always-visible timer makes time concrete. Elapsed time stops being something you estimate and becomes something you glance at. Close the loop at the end of the day
Seeing time during the work is half of it. The other half is seeing where it went afterward. Sonuga-Barke's dual-pathway model of ADHD includes delay aversion, the idea that the ADHD brain needs feedback closer to the behavior to regulate around it. An end-of-day picture of where your hours actually went is that feedback.
Over time this is how the gap closes. When you can compare what a day felt like with what it actually was, your sense of time gets a little more calibrated. Not through pressure, just through honest information, shown back to you while it still means something.
