deepstint vs Forest: An Honest Comparison

By Cristobal Dupuis4 min read

Forest and deepstint both put a clock on focused work, which is why they get compared. They are not built for the same failure. Forest is built for picking up the phone. deepstint is built for never starting. If those are different problems for you, the choice is easy. If they are the same afternoon, you may want both, or neither.

What Forest is

Forest is a gamified focus timer. You plant a virtual tree when a session starts. Stay in the app and the tree grows. Leave for another app and the tree dies. The forest you keep is the record. It is cute on purpose. The loss of a tree is mild, concrete, and immediate, which is why it works for a lot of people who otherwise bounce to Instagram mid-task.

Forest is also cheap in a way most ADHD tools are not. On iOS it is a small one-time purchase. On Android there is a free tier with ads, and a cheap unlock. As of 2026 that is still the shape. The install base is enormous relative to anything in the ADHD-planner category. Credit: for phone impulse, Forest is the default answer, and it earned that.

What deepstint is

deepstint does not try to stop you touching your phone. It tries to make starting cheap, keep the session quiet, and leave an honest picture of the day. Type a task, hit Enter, the timer is running. Abandoned stints still count. There is no plant to kill and no streak to protect. At the end of the day you get hours and stints, not a forest.

  • Local-first. No account required to start.
  • Partner, category, task tagging for people who invoice.
  • $39 a year after beta, one price, two people. Free to use during the public beta.

The no-guilt line is the real split. Forest uses a small loss to keep you in the session. That is a legitimate design. It is also the opposite of how deepstint treats a lapse. If a dead tree makes you put the phone down, Forest is doing its job. If a dead tree makes you close the app for a week, it is the wrong mechanic for you. A small loss landing as shame, not as a nudge, is more common than Forest's marketing can admit.

Where they overlap

Both are timers. Both can turn "I will work for 25 minutes" into a thing that starts. If all you want is a countdown, either one will give you that, and Forest will do it with less setup and a prettier object on screen. The overlap stops there. Forest does not track billable work. deepstint does not grow a tree, and does not block other apps.

Which to choose

Choose Forest if the failure mode is the phone, and a cute consequence is enough to keep you in the session. Choose deepstint if the failure mode is starting, or if you need a record you could hand to a client. Some people run Forest on the phone and deepstint in the browser. That is a reasonable split: one guards the pocket, the other records the work.

Common questions

Is deepstint a Forest alternative?

Only if what you wanted from Forest was a timer. Forest is built to keep you off your phone. deepstint is built to get you started and tell you where the time went.

Does deepstint kill a tree if I leave?

No. Abandoned stints still count. There are no streaks, scores, or dying plants.
